Organize digital files so you can find it later???!!!

So I'm new to digital scrapbooking and my files in my computer are beginning to look like my traditional scrapbooking files (space), OVERFLOWING!! I have purchased so much and downloaded so many freebies that I wonder how in the world I'm going to find the special something (the reason I bought or downloaded the digital file) when I really need it. The same question I've struggled with in my traditional scrapbooking only digital takes up less physical space (which only makes my elephant bigger!!) I am currently digitally filing everything under designer. Any tips that work are greatly appreciated!! Thanks in advance!!

It comes down to personal preference.
Some sort by designer like you do. Some sort by store, than designer. Some sort by category... kids, summer, spring, holiday (with subcategories).

I sort by Store, then designer.

For my CT work I have spreadsheets I use to keep track of the kits.

That might work for organizing for you.

Or, make a notepad doc with each kit, and make notes of why you purchased the kit.

Like LilyAnn said....it's all personal preference.

I file by store then designer, I use a Mac and my folders all have the preview on the front of it so that makes it easier to see what is in it. I have never really sorted by theme, I have too many kits and it would take me forever.
I do have a purge every so often though to free up space. I don't really download freebies any more (it would have to be special and really high quality). So maybe think about having a clean up and getting rid of any kits you will never use..

I do like Cathy and Vicki, I sort by store, then designer. I too used to download all freebies I could find in the beginning but don't any more. If you do challenges in the forums you are supposed to use the designers of the shop linked to the forum, so you won't have any use for all the freebies. I have a external hard disk where I put all freebies and retired designers. I don't want to delete them.

I sort by designer name. I found that designers hop around too much to sort by store.

I use OneNote to tag (if I could ever find time to finish it). I've tried a lot of tagging systems and done a lot of other tutorials on them, but for me, the other systems risk loss of tags, but this is simple and effective.

    My tutorial.

A little late in this discussion. I'll add that I do separate out some themes (holiday - Christmas, Easter, Hallowe'en, Thanksgiving, particularly if the kit is primarily specific to that holiday. e.g. some Easter kits are easily Spring-themed.) I also separate out the artsy/art journal kits. I, too, downloaded many, many freebies in the beginning. I'm much more selective now. I particularly like specific stores' blog hops. I never paper scrapped, so I don't know how messy that can get, but I can imagine! Good luck to you.
